Flickrbot malfunction
[edit]Dear MGA73,
I don't know if you know who deals with the malfunctioning flickrbot. I think it is Stefan2 now. Goodnight, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:56, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Leoboudv: sadly I do not know who can restart the bot. I hope the notice will reach someone.
- I have not followed up on the PDM files for some time. I hope most of the files are either deleted or "saved" by a DR. Did you have any time to follow up? --MGA73 (talk) 14:10, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Just for your records...This was added just to the message above to get the flickrbot working again.
- Done. Thank you, Stemoc, the bot has been rebooted and is working now. // sikander
I knew It was a Stemoc who know works on this problem...just not Stemoc2. I had forgotten. As for the PDM files, I know some people have uploaded PDM files as cc0 as this category shows but the bot still does not allow PDM image uploads. Most of the old PDM images should be deleted or kept by now. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:08, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Leoboudv: I will add the new PDM files to a user category. Then we can see if there are any big categories that should be fixed with the bot. --MGA73 (talk) 19:39, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
Please review these images if you can
[edit]Dear Michael,
Please kindly review these 2 images below when you can.
I managed to persuade Andreas on flickr to license the second image freely. Thank You for your time. I cannot use Andreas' image on wikipedia until it is reviewed, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:06, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Leoboudv: Done! Nice work getting the license changed. --MGA73 (talk) 13:30, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind help. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:19, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Dear Michael,
I sent you an Email. Can you please reply to it? Its about permission for this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Austroboletus_occidentalis_Watling_%26_N.M._Greg._by_Gerhard_Koller.jpg On the MO (mushroom observer) source, the image has a NC restriction but the copyright owner has tried to send permission through permission-commons@wikimedia.org and failed. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:48, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- I was wondering, can I get the copyright owner to send me the license permission to me and then try to Email it to permission-commons@wikimedia.org Mr. Koller said he does not have his log in information to enter his Mushroom Observer account anymore. I had Emailed him through the Mushroom Observer Email system. Please send me an Email. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:58, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi! I answered your mail. But I just checked https://www.mycoportal.org/portal/collections/individual/index.php?occid=8012265 and it says "Usage Rights: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/". So do we need a mail? --MGA73 (talk) 19:21, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Dear Michael, Firstly, please check my new Email to you about Koller's CORRECTED Email address...which is actually suillellusadonis WITH TWO LL characters. Please send him a Wikimedia Email to this corrected address at gmail.com. Secondly, the mycoportal image links to Mushroom Observer (MO) here: https://mushroomobserver.org/images/189613 (I have signed in to the MO site) where Mr. Koller changed the license of his image to CC BY NC SA 3.0. on October 6, 2017. It has been this license since then to today. That is why an OTRS ticket is necessary from Mr. Koller. In reality, Mr. Koller changed the license on ALL his 20,533 mushroom images to CC BY NC SA 3.0. on October 6, 2017 at Mushroom Observer...after I checked his other images. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:11, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Leoboudv: I have send a new mail. I think the original mail he send to us failed because he tried to write to permission-commons instead of permissions-commons (missing the s in the end of permissions). --MGA73 (talk) 15:36, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
Wikiversity fair use files of Marshallsumter
[edit]Hi Michael!
Please move all of my fair use files to the Keep category you mentioned in your note to me. A number of the resources and courses I created including Radiation astronomy have been moved to user space since I was blocked by Dave Braunschweig for repeat use of incapable copyright information. As you know USA copyright law and fair use law with case law are separate entities. Any fair use file that is used in a thumbnail has been transformed by the use of the thumbnail image to free use. I can indicate where you can confirm what I've written here in USA case law if you need it. Any EDP that abridges USA fair use law is actually illegal technically.
Cheers,
Henry A. Hoff, aka Marshallsumter - Marshallsumter (talk) 17:57, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Marshallsumter! Fair use is only allowed if there is a valid fair use rationale. For example v:File:Definitions-demotivator tomatoes.jpg. What prevented you or any one else in taking a photo of a tomato and make a similar file? Or v:File:Island of Corvo from Flores.jpg? It is not enought that you can't find a free file but you also have to make sure that we can't "... reasonably expect someone to upload a freely licensed file for the same purpose". If it only were a few files I'm sure someone would have been willing to spend the time going through the files but you uploaded so many files.
- Moving all the files to the keep category would only make community ignore the category. --MGA73 (talk) 19:30, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi again! You've missed the point of what I mentioned above. Our EDP's require "fair use is only allowed if there is a valid fair use rationale." USA fair use no longer does because it is a separate set of laws and case law from copyright law, after the case rulings of 2020 and 2021. Any file uploaded and used as a thumbnail has been transformed to a free use file by its display using a thumbnail. It's that simple. The uploaded file should also be displayed in a thumbnail if there's any concern that the uploaded file is an exact copy of a copyrighted file. There's no need to look for a free file by USA fair use law and case law! In fact, all transformed fair use files because they are now free use are allowable on Commons though popular opinion here or on Wikiversity is likely to disagree. If there are any of my files remaining that do not have a rationale from when they were uploaded I can supply one but as I mentioned if they are used in a thumbnail they have been transformed to free use or as mentioned here at the bottom of this page: "By saving changes, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license and the GFDL." --Marshallsumter (talk) 00:25, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Marshallsumter! Just because something is or might be legal it does not mean it is welcome on wikimedia projekts. Non-commercial licenses are legal but still they are not welcome. All wikimedia projekts have to follow wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy. --MGA73 (talk) 07:12, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm familiar with all of the above and was in the process of making certain all of my fairuse images had a rationale. Dave's block may have prevented me from completing that review. Wikiversity's current EDP was modified by one user without consensus approval or even comment to what it is now. Implied consent does not apply. That individual no longer edits Wikiversity. But, Wikiversity was set up to allow fair use. Fair use does not involve the copyright holder since 2021. I can't stop you from deleting my images and WMF legal is aware that currently transformed copyrighted or presumed copyrighted images are free use. Fair use images transformed by the use of thumbnails are free use but are not welcome because of overly restrictive EDPs which actually violate wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy goal of free use for all images, even copyrighted ones. The problem on Wikiversity to which we agree is USA free use images are legal "but still they are not welcome." These same images are also legally free to be on Commons "but still they are not welcome." This latter viewpoint is also against the goal of the wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy. Your personal point of view is of course up to you. Cheers! --Marshallsumter (talk) 16:37, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Marshallsumter! Personally I think it would be much easier if there was a place like Commons for all fair use files. It does seem like extra work that every wiki have to make sure a photo qualify as fair use. And some wikis do allow pretty much everything. Even if fair use is allowed there is no rule saying that all wikiprojects have to allow fair use. I think fair use works best for the big wikis because there are many active users that can help monitor. --MGA73 (talk) 18:38, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- As I mentioned the problem is that the Wikipedia and Wikiversity EDPs are outdated and no longer apply to fair use images once any image has been used in a thumbnail. The USA Supreme Court decided that once an image is used in a thumbnail it has been transformed by that thumbnail into a free use file. It's that simple! --Marshallsumter (talk) 06:03, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Marshallsumter! You may think that the EDP is outdated and you may even be right but as long as WMF have not changed the policy we all have to follow that. There is no law saying Wikiprojects have to host everything there is legal. --MGA73 (talk) 06:11, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- The WMF cannot change any policy because it is over-ruled by local consensus where it exists. As I've mentioned that consensus does not exist on Wikiversity. Check the policy history and you'll see what I mentioned above about one user changing it. No consensus ever occurred! You're following a phony policy! --Marshallsumter (talk) 06:29, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
- Marshallsumter and your open unwillingness to follow the WMF resolution is the reason you were blocked. --MGA73 (talk) 17:27, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

- I've been following the wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy since day one. It's USA fair use law and case law that has evolved to its current state as of 2021 as being independent of copyright law and its case law. Unfortunately, Wikiversity has not kept up, that's why I was blocked! --Marshallsumter (talk) 17:41, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

Dear MGA73,
Am I right in assuming that you cannot log into Mushroom Observer to review this image uploaded by me? Just curious...and goodnight from Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 11:57, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Leoboudv: Yes, I do not have an account there. So I will have to sign up to review the photo. --MGA73 (talk) 13:42, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: I will ask Lymantria if he can help then. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:38, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
Dear Michael,
Christian Ferrer decided to register into Mushroom Observer to review my image above and a second upload by me. In 2019, apparently it was not necessary to log in to review MO images...when he reviewed some of mine.
- My question is in this MO Category, is there a way to find the latest MO uploads from 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 which may not have been reviewed? I found only one MO uploader whose images I reviewed like this or this Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:51, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Secondly, if you can, please review the image below. It has no links to Mushroom Observer and you don't have to register to view the source.
- File:Lactarius rimosellus Peck.jpg

- @Leoboudv: Hi! Do you mean something like this https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=28655194 ? If I made this correct there are 289 files. --MGA73 (talk) 06:13, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Yes. that is correct. I will review the 289 images soon. Please also review this image below by me...which is not from Mushroom Observer.

- @Leoboudv: Done--MGA73 (talk) 06:24, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank You kindly, Best Wishes, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:25, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
Three images for review
[edit]Dear Michael,
I reviewed all the Mushroom Observer images and nominated 7 of the remaining 8 images for deletion. I also reviewed many images from an African safari web site...but if possible please review these 3 images below...so that there is a second independent reviewer.
Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:38, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Leoboudv: Great work! I reviewed the three files. Currently I'm working om GFDL-files: m:User:MGA73/GFDL files. --MGA73 (talk) 06:36, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- And sad to see some Mushroom Observer images go but unless photographer agree to relicense we can't keep them. --MGA73 (talk) 06:40, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Thanks for your help. In virtually all cases, the Mushroom Observer images were already not free with an NC license when they were uploaded to Commons. The Mushroom Observer site shows the date of license changes and the version of the license used at a certain time. The default license at MO is actually CC BY SA 3.0 Generic...unlike flickr. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:55, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Two or Three questions about an MO image and life in Denmark
[edit]- Comment: Is it OK to use this image now: File:Austroboletus occidentalis Watling & N.M. Greg. by Gerhard Koller.jpg ?
I don't use unapproved images on wikipedia.
- As an aside on a personal note, is inflation a problem in Denmark after the covid era? In Canada and the US, buying homes is very difficult because a person's savings has been eroded by all the government expenditures during the covid era....which led to high inflation. If I had bought real estate in 2015, my house value would increased by more than 100% (or doubled in value) unlike my sister who got married in 2010 with a great white man and has 2 daughters now and of, course, had to buy a home in 2010...when homes were cheap in Canada up until 2016 or 2017. I still live with my father and am single at age 50. Inflation is one of the reasons why Biden is behind Trump in the US presidential polls right now. Inflation hurts the poor and middle class but the rich are not affected since they own many homes whose value is not hurt by inflation. Recently I saw this article saying that Gwyneth Paltrow is listing her California home Here for $30 million. But she bought it in 2012 for $9.95 million US. But California like Canada is experiencing a housing crisis and there are many people living in parks and RVs because even small condos are expensive. In Canada, people can only dream of even buying a home. Detached single family Homes are now almost for the rich. People think that Canada is a great country to visit and that is right with the mountains and lakes but its a hard country to live in. Few outsiders know that 20% of Canadians don't even have a family doctor as you can see in this Article. Canada may have free health care but if you don't have a doctor or primary care physician, it is not worth much. In Atlantic Canada where less Canadians live, up to 33% of people don't have a family doctor. So, Canada has a health care crisis too. I am just lucky I have a doctor in British Columbia, Canada. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 20:52, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Hello! Yes the ticket is okay now. It turns out he sent a new ticket using the correct email instead of replying to my mail. So you can use it!
Yes there are inflation in Denmark and prices for houses are going up. But many live in a rented home and everyone can get help paying rent if its a problem.
Wages also go up and there is free health care in Denmark and eveyone can get a doctor (perhaps not one close to you). So it is not that bad for most people.
I bought a house long ago so for me the housing prices is not a problem. It is harder for my son but it is easy to borrow money in Denmark (if you have a job). --MGA73 (talk) 08:28, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank You for your comments. I had sent an Email to G. Koller showing him my mistake in the Email permission address and suggesting he sent in a new Email permission to the correct VRTS permission address. As for myself, I can say that I wish I had bought a home 15 or 20 years ago when everything was cheap but as I have no wife or children unlike my sister, the only thing I could afford would be a one bedroom condo. And that does not include the utilities such as the elecric and water bills ever month. Secondly, I am an independent contractor who works in the private sector and I don't know how predictable my income is month tp month. You are fortunate that you have a son because I have no children or sibling except for my sister. My mum passed away in 2015 as this obituary shows I am amazed it is still online after so long. The rest of my family are back in Malaysia or in Australia. If you want to take a vacation, you can visit Malaysia as the currency there is very low in value and you can get a lot for your Danish currency in Kuala Lumpur, the capital. Many people speak English in Malaysia since it was a former British colony. Best Wishes, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:11, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
Yeah I know. Kids can be a pain in the b*** but also they are great (most of the time). I have been working on files on mswikipedia some time ago so I have seen many photos from Malaysia. There are still work to be done there but I was hoping local admins would fix it :-) --MGA73 (talk) 10:27, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- You can see ms:Pengguna:MGA73/Status and I was an admin there for some time lol. --MGA73 (talk) 10:30, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- It is 3:42 AM in Vancouver and i have to sign off. I hope most Malaysians understand copyright. The uploader in this DR asked me to pass this image on my talkpage. I had 2 images of his tagged as copy vios and launched this DR to tell me what the rules were on Commons. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 10:47, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
